Our groundworks & drainage service

Almost every problem we get called out to fix is a groundworks problem showing through a surface. Paving that sinks, lawns that sit in water, driveways that rut and patios that pond all trace back to what was or was not done below. We excavate to depth, cart the spoil away, lay and compact sub-bases in layers rather than in one lift, and work out where surface water is going before anything covers it. Channel drains, gullies, land drains and soakaways all have a place, and which one you need depends on the ground and the outfall available.

Our process

How it works

  1. 01

Tell us what you want to change

Call, message or send the form. Photos of the garden as it stands now are the fastest way for us to understand the job.

  2. 02

    We visit and take levels

We look at levels, drainage, access and what is already there, then talk through what is realistic in the space and the budget.

  3. 03

    You get a written quote

Each part of the work is priced separately, so you can see what the paving costs against the turf, the fencing or the walls.

  4. 04

    We book a start date

We agree a date, confirm access for machinery and skips, and let you know how long the garden will be out of use.

  5. 05

    We finish and clear up

Waste goes, the site is swept, and we hand over anything you need to know about looking after new turf or planting.

Why choose us

Why choose us for groundworks & drainage

  • A family-run team, so you deal with the people doing the work rather than a call centre.
  • The groundwork goes in before the surface, which is what decides how long the job lasts.
  • Driveways, paving, walls, fencing and turf are all in-house, so the levels and finishes line up.
  • A written price with the materials named, so you can compare it properly.

What affects the price

No two jobs price the same. These are the things that move it most:

  • The volume of material coming out and the cost of taking it away
  • What is found once the surface is off
  • Depth of sub-base, which the ground conditions and use dictate
  • The drainage solution: a channel drain to an existing gully is far cheaper than a new soakaway
  • Access for a digger and a grab wagon
  • Any services found running through the area

FAQs

Groundworks & Drainage FAQs

Why does my garden hold water?

Usually compacted subsoil or heavy clay with nowhere for water to go, and often it is made worse by a layer of imported topsoil sitting on top of a compacted pan. Land drainage or a soakaway gives the water somewhere to run.

Can I drain surface water into the foul drain?

No. Surface water and foul drainage are separate systems and connecting one to the other is not allowed. It has to go to a surface water drain or a soakaway.

What is a soakaway?

A pit or crated void filled or formed below ground, wrapped in membrane, that holds surface water and lets it soak away into the ground. It is the usual answer where there is no surface water drain to connect into.
