Patios services

Our path & steps service

Steps are the part of a garden most often built by eye, and uneven risers are what catch people out in the dark. We set out steps so every rise is the same and the goings are deep enough to stand on comfortably, with a nosing overhang so the edge reads clearly. Paths get the same treatment as any other paved area: dug out, based, bedded and restrained at the edges, with a fall across the width so water sheds rather than sitting in the middle. Materials are usually picked to tie the path into the patio or driveway it connects.

What is included

What you get with path & steps

Everything below is part of the quoted price rather than an extra added on afterwards.

  • Setting out so every riser in a flight is the same height
  • Compacted sub-base under paths and step foundations
  • Steps built off a concrete foundation with a blockwork or brick core
  • Nosing overhang on treads so the step edge is easy to read
  • Cross-fall on paths so water runs off
  • Edge restraint against lawn, beds and walls

Our process

How it works

  1. 01

    Tell us about the job

Call, message on WhatsApp or send the quote form with your postcode and a rough idea of the area. A photo or two helps us picture it before we arrive.

  2. 02

    We come and measure up

We visit, measure the area, check access for machinery and materials, and look at where surface water currently goes.

  3. 03

    You get a written quote

The price is set out in writing with the materials named, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and compare it against anyone else.

  4. 04

    We book a start date

Once you are happy, we agree a date that suits you and tell you what to expect on site, including where the skip and materials will sit.

  5. 05

    We finish and clear up

The job is finished, the site is swept and cleared, and we walk it with you before we leave.

Why choose us

Why choose us for path & steps

  • A family-run team, so you deal with the people doing the work rather than a call centre.
  • The groundwork goes in before the surface, which is what decides how long the job lasts.
  • Driveways, paving, walls, fencing and turf are all in-house, so the levels and finishes line up.
  • A written price with the materials named, so you can compare it properly.

What affects the price

No two jobs price the same. These are the things that move it most:

  • Path length and width, and the amount of cutting the route creates
  • The number of steps and the height they have to climb
  • Whether retaining walls are needed at the sides of a flight
  • Material choice and whether it matches an existing patio
  • Ground conditions and access down the side of the house

Areas we cover

We take on path & steps across Mansfield, Nottingham, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Alfreton, Heanor, Ilkeston, Shirebrook and Clay Cross.

FAQs

Path & Steps FAQs

How wide should a garden path be?

A main path is more comfortable at around a metre so two people can pass or you can get a wheelbarrow along it. A side access path can be narrower where the space is tight.

Can you match the steps to my patio?

Yes. Steps are usually built in the same paving as the patio they lead from, whether that is Indian sandstone, porcelain or concrete slabs, with the tread cut from a full slab and the riser faced in the same stone or in a contrasting block.

Do steps need a handrail?

For a short flight in a garden it is usually a preference rather than a requirement, but on a steep or long flight it is worth having. We will point it out if we think the flight warrants one.
